Four ties hold a marriage together. Money is the one that snaps first.

The Namibian reported 111 divorces recorded at the High Court in a single day, 67 in Windhoek and 44 at Oshakati. Marriage counsellors quoted in the paper put much of it down to a "desire for material wealth" and the social pressure to marry in the first place.
Court figures only show the cases that reach a judge. Many marriages end quietly, with no papers and no courtroom. The 2023 Namibia Population and Housing Census counted 4,835 people in the Khomas region alone recorded as divorced, and that is only the separations that made it onto the record.

So what is marriage, and why does it break? It is more than sharing a house. It is a tie across four areas at once: physical, emotional, spiritual and financial. A marriage holds when both people keep investing in all four. When one is neglected, the others start to strain, and two people can end up sharing a table and a roof while living separate lives. Of the four, money is the one that most often forces the trouble into the open.
That is not because money matters more than love. It is because financial pressure is constant and shared. A couple can paper over a great deal, but unpaid bills, hidden debt and clashing ideas about spending sit at the kitchen table every day. The counsellors in that report named the chase for material wealth by name. How two people handle money together is often what decides whether the other three areas get the room to recover.
None of this means a strained marriage cannot come back. Start with two honest questions: how do you actually see your partner, and what do you believe about yourself inside this marriage? From there, a few things help:
Listen properly. Let your partner voice anger and hurt without cutting in or defending yourself.
Work on your own part before trying to change theirs.
Get counselling, on your own and as a couple, to deal with personal triggers and shared problems.
Show appreciation every day.
Make time together that builds closeness, a date, a weekend away, or something small and free. It does not have to cost money to matter.
What carries a marriage is two people working as a team to meet each other's needs across all four areas: rebuilding emotional closeness, physical connection, spiritual alignment and a shared handle on money.
If money is the area straining your relationship, that is worth facing directly. The Money Fitness Mindset survey takes a few minutes. It is built to help you and your partner see where the financial pressure is coming from and what to do about it.
It is a starting point: a way to name the frustration and find the guidance to work through it.
